One Nation to introduce ban on burning Australian flag
One Nation to introduce ban on burning Australian flag
27 January 2026
Burning the Australian or South Australian flags at public protests would be banned under legislation to be introduced by One Nation after the state election.
One Nation SA Legislative Council candidate Carlos Quaremba said an incident in Brisbane yesterday, at which an Australian flag was burned in the street, should not be repeated anywhere in the country.
“It’s time that Australians took their country back and outlawed this outrageous and petty behaviour,” Mr Quaremba said. “It’s always the worst of the activists sowing this sort of division on our national day. It’s part of an anti-Australian mindset that always seeks to divide us rather than uniting us by focusing on the one thing we all share: we’re all Australians.
“Along with many of our One Nation candidates for the state election, I was very happy to attend the Australia Day march in Adelaide that was peaceful and fun, where people celebrated what’s good about our country under a sea of blue Australian flags.
“That’s the Australia I know and love. That’s the Australia One Nation strives for: one country and one people united under one flag: the Australian flag. We have no time for those who hate Australia and want to bring it down.
“One Nation MPs elected to Parliament at this state election will introduce legislation that will make burning the Australian and South Australian flags illegal, with a significant financial penalty for those who breach the law.
“One Nation believes in equality for all Australians. We believe South Australia belongs to all South Australians equally. We believe in equal rights for all, and special rights for none irrespective of whatever victimhood identity you’ve chosen to adopt today.
“That’s why we’ll make repealing the indigenous voice to Parliament a priority at this election, and that’s why we’ll crack down on those who deliberately disrespect the Australian people by burning our national flag.”
