One Nation opposes gun law changes in SA

 21 January 2026

Law-abiding firearm owners in South Australia must not be used as scapegoats by a Labor government desperate to deflect from Anthony Albanese’s failure to check antisemitism in Australia.

One Nation SA leader Carlos Quaremba said his party would oppose any move to place further unnecessary restrictions on firearm owners in the aftermath of the Bondi atrocity.

“We don’t have a gun problem in South Australia,” Mr Quaremba said. “Not one lawful firearm owner in South Australia bears any responsibility for the tragedy at Bondi. They should not be punished as convenient scapegoats for Labor’s failure to check the rise of antisemitism.

“We already have some of the world’s toughest and most restrictive gun laws. Lawful firearm owners already face considerable discrimination. SAPOL’s firearms branch is chronically under-resourced when it comes to processing legitimate licence and permit applications.

“One Nation strongly supports the right to own and use firearms lawfully and responsibly. We do not consider that owning a firearm, in itself, is wrong or criminal. We support the right of Australians to participate in sports involving firearms, to use firearms for hunting or recreational shooting, to collect antique and historically significant firearms, and to use firearms in rural areas for pest and stock management.

“We’re backing the farmers and other lawful firearm owners in South Australia. It’s not the job of Peter Malinauskas to salvage Anthony Albanese’s reputation as a weak and ineffective prime minister who presided over the worst ever terrorist attack on Australian soil. That horse has bolted. What the Premier needs to do is focus resources on the real problem: antisemitism and radical Islam.

“Our firearms policy includes reversing any further restrictions on lawful firearm ownership that could be made in the aftermath of Bondi.

“We also seek better resourcing for SAPOL’s firearms branch to improve efficiencies, standardising firearms licence periods for all firearm categories, and undertaking a comprehensive review of the National Firearms Agreement to promote uniform rules and regulations across all states and territories.

“While we strongly support lawful firearm ownership and use, we strongly condemn unlawful possession and use. We will move tougher penalties for crimes in which a firearm has been brandished or used.”
