Major parties’ preference is them, not you

Major parties’ preference is them, not you

26 January 2026

The Labor and Liberal parties contesting the South Australian election in March are working hard to preserve a two-party system that only works in their interests and not for the people of South Australia.

One Nation SA candidate for the Legislative Council Carlos Quaremba said the party’s leadership was invited to meet with the major parties last week.

“During the meeting the real agenda became clear: it wasn’t about saving South Australia,” Mr Quaremba said. “Our meeting with the Liberals confirmed what many South Australians already suspect: they’re focused on saving themselves, not saving the state. Labor made promises too.—

“It was obvious they both prefer a cosy two-party system; a system which protects them, not the South Australian people. We’ve heard the same thing from no less than the Prime Minister himself.

“That’s why South Australians need to knoq: South Australia does not win by playing the major party power games. If we want the real change our state desperately needs, we need to vote for it by backing One Nation.

“It was clear to me that the Liberal and Labor parties were only interested in winning or retaining power, and had no concern for the people of South Australia. It shows that they truly are two sides of the same coin, prepared to rotate the spoils of victory among themselves while South Australians cry out for true representation, democracy and leadership. Our state deserves better.

“The two-party system has been in place for decades but that wasn’t always the case, and recent elections have seen a significant decline in the major parties’ primary vote. The latest Newspoll showed the combined Labor-Coalition vote had fallen to a record low 53%. People are informing their votes and moving away from the two-party system. Many are backing One Nation.

“Preferences belong to voters. They decide how to number their ballot papers, not politicians. Preferences don’t belong to the political parties and they shouldn't be determined in back rooms.”
